The Value of Culture

It's an interesting time to be talking about the value of culture. Hot on the heels (well, warm) of Secretary of State Maria Miller's recent comments about the arts' need to emphasise their economic rather than artistic value came the publication on Tuesday of a piece of research into the value of culture published by the Centre for Economics and Business Research.

You can download the whole report here, but we have summarised the main points of interest in the document embedded below. We thought that there were several angles in the report which the media failed to pick up on - in particular, the elements which talked about the disproportionate benefits which locally-focused culture can have on communities, which is a theme we think we will be hearing a lot more of in the coming months. With the long-awaited spending review scheduled for next month, and the arts once again looking at potential cuts, it will be interesting to see whether any of the report's conclusions are reflected in policy...
