Film Studios Trial Venue-Agnostic ‘Watch Anywhere’ Tickets

As reported by the Wall Street Journal, both Sony and Disney are trialling a system in South Korea which allows cinemagoers the option of buying a ticket to see a film or to rent it at home from a cable, Internet or satellite-television provider.

This is a potentially game-changing approach to cinema releases, and could be the industry's strongest gambit yet in the ongoing war against film piracy. Obviously the success of the scheme will be determined by all sorts of additional factors - we'd imagine a degree of differentiated pricing will be essential in driving consumer uptake - but as a principal it's a smart idea, and indicative of a wider trend amongst publishers towards driving consumption of media, regardless of the platform or medium.
