Phillips Gallery NYC Stages First Ever Digital Art Auction
Its hard to tell from the text of the announcement whether this is a first for the Phillips Gallery or a first overall...but a bit of Google searching doesn't throw up much else in the field of digital art sales which compares.
Working in partnership with Tumblr, itself increasingly seen as at the vanguard of digital arts, glitch culture and the much discussed/derided concept of the 'new aesthetic', the gallery is actively seeking submissions in advance of the auction on 10th October 2013. To quote:
"PHILLIPS AND TUMBLR PRESENT PADDLES ON!, A GROUND-BREAKING EVENT THAT BRINGS TOGETHER ARTISTS WHO ARE USING DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES TO ESTABLISH THE NEXT GENERATION OF CONTEMPORARY ART. THIS COLLECTION IS THE FIRST DIGITAL ART AUCTION AT PHILLIPS, IN RECOGNITION OF THE INCREASING VIABILITY OF THIS WORK IN THE CONTEMPORARY MARKET.
WE ARE SEEKING SUBMISSIONS FROM THE TUMBLR COMMUNITY AND BEYOND, INCLUDING ANIMATED GIFS, WEBSITES, SOFTWARE, NET ART, AND VIDEOS.
SELECTED WORKS WILL BE ON VIEW AT PHILLIPS’S PARK AVENUE GALLERY IN ANTICIPATION OF THE LIVE AUCTION ON OCTOBER 10, 2013. THE WORKS WILL ALSO BE AVAILABLE FOR ONLINE BIDDING THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH PADDLE8.
ARTISTS WILL RECEIVE 80% OF THE PROCEEDS OF THE SALE OF THEIR WORK AND 20% PERCENT WILL BE DONATED TO RHIZOME, THE LEADING NONPROFIT DEDICATED TO SUPPORTING CONTEMPORARY ART ENGAGED WITH TECHNOLOGY SINCE 1996. "
You can see the site, and submit work, here - we can't wait to see how the auction pans out...
