National #Selfie Portrait Gallery Coming To London
As we count down the few short weeks until Frieze, and London prepares to welcome the art world to its welcoming bosom, we're starting to see the announcements of international gallery residencies for the week filtering through.
The first to catch our eye is Moving Image Gallery's residency at The Bargehouse from 17-20 October, which will present the National #Selfie Portrait Gallery - 'an installation of 16 emerging artists from the EU and the US who have created short-form videos engaging with the medium and concept of the “selfie,” the omnipresent slang for the digital self-portraits found across all social networks'.
It'll be interesting to see whether the selected artists - an impressive roster, it must be said - are able to squeeze much new or interesting from the concept of the 'selfie'; if anything's certain, though, it's that this year's Art Week will see a massive preponderance of work examining the impact of digital technologies on society - and that most of it will be less interesting than the stuff that the internet throws up on a rolling basis every 10 minutes or so.
